Trial #2: Success with Tinted Mason Jars
I said I would perfect it, and by golly , I think I did! It may not be Perfect with a capital P, but it definiately looks better than my first trial. This time, instead of paint and bake type paint, I used mod podge and food coloring. This technique actually makes alot of sense seeing as how mod podge dries clear! Within this technique for the color medium, I did two different techniques to apply it.
I used glossy mod podge, a little bit of food coloring, a little bit of water, and then mixed them all together to make the colors I wanted. No real measurements were taken, just a few drops of this, a tad bit of that, and a bunch of this! I will still have to play with the fractions of mod podge verses coloring in order to find the right tint for each project. The original post I got the idea from did not combine all mediums at once, they mixed the food coloring and water together, placed it in the jar, then added the mod podge. I read some of the comments which suggested combining all which may decrease the streaky outcome.
The two different techniques I tried were 1) pouring the mixture inside the jar, twist and turn it so that it covers the entire inside, and then let it dry for about 30 minutes upside down before placing in the oven and 2) painting the outside of the jar, letting dry for about 30 minutes before placing in the oven.
The first time I mixed a bit too much food coloring into the mixture, which are the two that I did inside the jar. But, they still came out looking nice, just not as translucent as the others. The second time around I mixed only a little bit of color and lightly painted the outside of the jar, giving just a hint of color after drying. Both techniques and amount of colors turned out nice, just a matter of preference for your projects or taste.
These are the jars after I painted and applied the color to each.
After you paint and let air dry for about 30 minutes, you'll notice the opaqueness start turning more translucent! Place the jars on a baking sheet in an oven turned on warm for about 20 - 30 minutes. The outside painting jars dried a lot sooner than the inside painted ones.
Below are the jars after being taken out of the oven.
I am in love with this new technique and will be tinting jars until I run out of them!
They make absolutely adorable vases with a bundle of bright flowers!
I started to like the darker colored jars more so than the lighter more translucent ones. At least until I find something to do with them that looks better with the lighter tinted jars :) Happy Tinting!
