Mossy Shamrock Frame
I go through style phases every so often. One minute I'm all about bold statement pieces { or large metallic gold and white stripes on walls } the next I'm in love with everything that has chalkboard paint on it. There is one thing I always love though, that's burlap. I love the texture, the neutral color, and its versatility.
My favorite project, so far, for my St. Patrick's Day decor is hands down this mossy shamrock. I found my inspiration through another bloggers post who placed the moss on clear glass with an antique white frame. The great thing about this project is that I made it so that I can switch out the background from the frame for different seasons. More about that later. The mossy shamrock gives so much texture and warmth, and I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out.
Side Note: I create a lot of frames using old cigar boxes. My frames don't have any glass or backing. I hand stain each frame as well. These frames can be purchased through the Shop page.
Supplies Needed:
Frame (minus the glass)
Moss
Glue (I used E6000)
Burlap sheet
velcro
Directions:
Step One - Create and Setup Shamrock
1. Print shamrock shape on regular paper
I found one online but you could easily draw one free hand directly on the burlap
2. Cut out shamrock shape
3. Trace shamrock shape on burlap that is cut to size to fit your frame
Make sure you pre cut or measure your burlap so that you can place the shamrock in the center of the background
Step Two - Add Moss
1. Start by tracing the edges of each leaf with your glue, then add more and spread in the center
I worked on one leaf at a time
2. Add your moss to the leaf in small quantities, trying to form it within the shape of your leaf
3. Once all the moss has been added, you may need to do a little yard work by trimming pieces so that you have a clear shamrock shape
I also trimmed pieces in the center so that there wasn't too many random stragglers. I wanted to make the shamrock appear as much as possible.
Step Three - Add Velcro
1. Cut small pieces of velcro for the four corners of your background and frame
2. Adhere the velcro pieces as needed
I used velcro with adhesive backing but you could add some glue to the back for extra support
Attach Background and Show it Off
Every time I look at this project I think it looks like something I could buy at a home decor store. So go on, create this beautiful piece and let people think you spent a lot of money to buy it ;)
